Description

Here is a fabulous looking Omega Speedmaster 145.022-ST-69 pre Moon, from 1970. One of the most recognisable, popular and dare we say it, beautiful chronographs ever made. The Omega Speedmaster. Considering our name, it’s no surprise that the Speedy is one of our favourites, in fact, the favourite, chronograph at the Chrono Duo’s HQ.

The design of the dial is timeless, it is steeped in history (the Moonwatch), and it just works on so many levels. If the Range Rover is the car that you can take to any occasion, anywhere, then the Speedmaster is its horological equivalent.

We tend to like a watch that shows its age, that hasn’t been overly refurbished or repolished. This particular Speedmaster is in fine fettle. The “-69” case, the bezel and the case back in remarkable condition. A few dings and a couple of minor scratches to the case and the bezel are all that’s visible.

The original (A4) “Single Bevel” case back is showing more wear as you would expect and the Hippocampus and wording around it are almost worn away. But isn’t it like owning a new car? You are terrified of that first scratch. Here they are already there, worn almost like a badge of honour. Mind you we wouldn’t recommend wearing such a watch whilst changing the gearbox on your vintage motor….

Likewise, the original black (C1) dial with the correct spaced “T’s” around “Swiss”, has the triple register layout, unchanged over decades with its stepped contours, is in great condition, However, the lume to the face and the hands has lost its luminosity.

The bezel is bright too; and again, is the correct bezel (B2); with the marker dot next to 0 of 70, no accent over TACHYMETRE, “C” stretched and closed, “E” with a slightly shorter middle stroke and “7’s” with a serif.

Similarly, the “Narrow & Flat Feet” crown (A2) and “Wide & Tall” pushers are in fine fettle and look original.

It has been fully serviced and checked over by our watchmaker, so timekeeping is excellent and the chronograph works properly too. Not bad, bearing in mind this is a 52-year-old watch! The 305xxxxx movement serial number puts this Speedy squarely into 1970.

During the service, we replaced the crystal, with a new original Omega, as, in a past service, it had been replaced with a generic one. The Omega “Happy feet” logo to the centre of the crystal is back!

Finally, the bracelet has been replaced, as it is a 1479 bracelet with 812 end-links from the early 80s. Not a major issue in our eyes, as in our opinion there isn’t a better-looking watch than a Speedy on a NATO!

So, it all adds up to a fantastic, aged example of a truly legendary watch. For any collector, there surely has to be a place in their collection for a Speedmaster of any age. If you don’t already have one, this would be a very good starting point from which to add one.

If you already have a Speedmaster, why stop at one? I bet you don’t have a “1970”!
