The Seamaster 600 Plongeur Professionnel or “PloProf” Ref: 166.077 Mk1 is undoubtedly the most recognisable watch ever produced by Omega.

Nothing, but nothing looks like a PloProf!

In the late 60s, in a whole new world of underwater exploration, oil rig construction, sub-aqua military special forces, and not to mention, civilian leisure scuba diving, there was an increasing demand for a highly legible, robust, high depth rated watch to keep divers safe. Launched by Omega at the 1969 Basel Watch Show and retailed from April 1971, the “PloProf” took the underwater world by storm!

Professional divers rarely bothered to clean their watches in fresh water after work, so mud, silt and salt residue would build up on the threads of the lock nut and thereby impede its ability to be unscrewed or tightened, which let’s face it, isn’t great for watches, at all.

So, it’s no surprise then, that given the rate of attrition, and the more than-average frequency of swapping movements, dials, bezels and even cases, our particular PloProf is no exception.

The dial and bezel have been replaced in the distant past. The dial is a “D6” Service dial with tritium markers. It is easily recognised as the lume touches the date window. The bezel is a “B1 Service B” bezel, identifiable by having an open loop 5 and a flat-topped 4.

The hands are “Variation 2” hands with the “extended lume” hour hand. These were probably replaced at the same time as the dial and bezel, but we shall never know.

The case is an Mk1 “Case 2”, with a “U” shaped cut-out for the crown and with a metal, rather than plastic, lock nut. It looks lived-in, but so it should.

Originally, this watch would have been sold with either a Black, Blue, Red or Yellow Isofrane rubber strap, but today it is presented on an Omega Milanese “Shark-Mesh” 1162 with 162 end links bracelet which really makes it sing. Extra links are also included ensuring even the Incredible Hulk could put it on!

Overall, it just looks right.

The 1002 calibre movement within, has been serviced by our watch-smith and is running perfectly.

So, it’s ready for its next adventure, will that adventure be yours?
